Augmentation
Augmentation has a different level of technology integration use than Substitution. For this level, teachers are using multimedia and interactive online components. The lesson may not be drastically different from traditional learning, but it does allow students to learn with technology at a slightly higher level of engagement (EdTech Classroom, 2021). The use of technology in Augmentation makes information clearer and can lead to more student centered learning, rather than waiting for teacher centered instruction (Best, 2020).
Examples of Augmentation could include activities like watching videos, tests done through Google Forms, or listening to individual books via a device rather than a teacher read-aloud for the entire class (Hamilton et al., 2016). Students creating mind maps using a technology program is another example of this level. It could be done with paper and pencil, but is instead done with a technology tool (Huynh, 2021). Additional examples include gamifying classroom instruction or assessment, teacher videos explaining topics allowing for students to interact and create meaningful connections at their own pace, and independent research that is student directed learning rather than teacher driven (Best, 2020).
